Why Literacy?
Literacy is all around you, is when you play a game in your computer, when you read a book, when you access the internet, when you talk to people, when you watch TV, when you write a letter or a simple text message. Literacy is the way we communicate and interact with the world around us.
This year you will be encouraged to develop your literacy skills in order to become a global citizen. We want you to work beyond the walls of the classroom and become an explorer.
This year you will be encouraged to develop your literacy skills in order to become a global citizen. We want you to work beyond the walls of the classroom and become an explorer.
So, what is our aim in literacy?
The goal is for you to take control. To understand the importance of becoming an independent learner and exploring new avenues of the thinking process. You will achieve this by understanding what are the expectations. That is why we have given you a copy of the Literacy Rubric. You can plot your own learning journey and aim for greater achievements.

The literacy rubric is a set of criteria to work towards when you are engaging in literacy tasks.
We are making you responsible of your own learning, for producing work that goes beyond what you can already do. It is a guide to show you the elements necessary to improve your skills. Keep track of your own learning. |
Critical ThinkingCritical thinking is the ability to go beyond the 'my teacher says...'
Critical thinking is discovering, understanding, questioning, analysing, modifying and evaluating the every day activities of our lives. It is about thinking for ourselves and making a difference in our lives, in the lives of those around us, in our community, our nation and at a global level. For example, why do you wear a hat to school? Is it because the teacher told you to? Or is it because you have judged the pros and cons of not wearing a hat and have come to the decision that protecting yourself against skin cancer is worth it? THAT is critical thinking! |
