Australian Natural Disasters
Australia experiences a range of 'natural disasters' including bushfires, floods, severe storms, earthquakes and landslides. These events cause great financial hardship for individuals and communities, and can result in loss of life, which has become part of Australian folklore.
However, these events are also considered both part of the natural cycle of weather patterns in Australia as well as being affected by human factors such as overstocking, vegetation loss, dams, groundwater and irrigation schemes. These patterns are recognised by terms such as a 100-year drought - a drought of severity that is only seen once in a hundred years. Fire can often follow drought, and drought can be followed by flood. Severe fires followed by drought can also contribute to soil erosion.

FloodsEvery year in NSW, floods cause millions of dollars in damages to infrastructure which has a negative effect in communities (SES FloodSafe)
The State Emergency Service has set up a website with important information about floods, causes, effects, warnings, what to do before-during-after a flood, information for adults and children and videos to educate school students about safety around flooded areas. Visit the SES FloodSafe website to learn more about floods. |
Project Scenario
The FloodSafe website has all the necessary information to keep people informed about the dangers of floods. The children's videos promote safety and teach about emergency procedures to primary aged school students. In this age of technology and gaming, the web designers have decided to add a computer game to their site. They have contacted your group and want you to use the information on the website to create a simple, yet informative game for primary-aged students.
The aim of the game should be to teach students about staying safe around floods. |
Timeframe
Presentation of your project is due on Thursday 11th April, Week 11.
Project Dates:
Your group must create a sales pitch to accompany their game deployment.
What is a sales pitch?
A sales pitch is a planned presentation of a product or service designed to initiate and close a sale of the same product or service. It is essentially designed to be either an introduction of a product or service to an audience who knows nothing about it, or a descriptive expansion of a product or service that an audience has already expressed interest in. Sales professionals prepare and give a sales pitch, which can be either formal or informal, and might be delivered in any number of ways.
Many sales professionals follow a specific format or guideline when developing a sales pitch. The pitch must accomplish several things in a short amount of time. It must present the product or service’s features, accessibility, and benefits. There are often several different people involved in its preparation and presentation.
For a sales pitch to be effective, the presenter must know their product well. Though a good one will leave few questions unanswered, the presenter must be able to answer any questions that arise as a result of piqued interest. Even if the pitch is delivered effectively, the presenter must be prepared to overcome any obstacles that might prevent the close of the sale.
Project Dates:
- Pre-Production Stage needs to be completed by Friday 22nd March
- Production Stage needs to be completed by Friday 5th April
- Testing Needs to be done before the 10th of April in order to allow for modifications and trouble shooting.
- Deployment is on the 11th April.
